More Firings In Mainstream Media June 19, 2007

I’m seeing more of this than I like:

The Gannett Co. newspaper in Montgomery, Ala., was forced to make quick and drastic budget cuts last week, editor Wanda Lloyd told Journal-isms on Monday, leaving three interns suddenly without summer jobs. Similar cuts could be coming at other Gannett properties.

Kudos to Schurz Communications for at least picking up where the big dawgs drop the ball. If the print industry is to continue to move forward, these fresh young minds and able bodies need to learn the ropes.

I don’t know everything, and I know I never got the opportunity to intern anywhere but I sure would have loved to have been able to have that experience. Budget cuts or no, as it was said so long ago in a song, the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.

The interns were luckier than most…
